       RECENT CLUB NEWS...

    • 28/03/12 - PBLTC Men's Singles Final 2011

The PBLTC Men's Club Singles Final 2011 was finally played on the 28th March 2012. The match had been put off its original date in September 2011 due to an injury to one of the Finalists and there was concern that the match might not be played at all. However, Mark Masters and Andre Mouskides eventually played each other in a thrilling match, with Andre coming out on top with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Having been unable to defend his 2009 title due to an injury in 2010 (he still entered the tournament but had to play left-handed!), he managed to secure his second Men's Singles title at Potters Bar with some superb tennis. The scoreline would suggest an easy victory but Mark put up a strong fight and there were some superb points, many of which were 15+ shot rallies.

With the win, Andre becomes only the 11th player in the Club's history to win the Men's Singles title more than once. Paul Guppy holds the record for most Men's Singles titles, with a staggering 15. The only other Club members in the Club's history (since 1934) to have won the Men's Singles title twice are Brian Wood, Ian Walters, Paul Tonks and Bertram Betts.

The final was umpired by Club chairman Mike Wheeler and was watched by a strong crowd. Thanks must go to all those who attended on the day to support the Club and the Finalists. Congratulations to Andre for his second PBLTC title!!

    • 28/11/11 - Men's Singles Final 2011 (Date Set)

The Men's Singles Final will be played between Mark Masters and Andre Mouskides on Wednesday 14th December 2011 commencing at 7pm. Please come down and support the two players - the standard of tennis will be very high as both competitors are excellent club players.

    • 17/09/11 - Potters Bar Annual Club Tournaments Finals Day 2011

The weather was overcast and some rain fell but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors or the spectators who were treated to some high standard tennis at the PBLTC Finals Day held on Saturday 17th September 2011.

The Ladies' Singles saw three-time champion Janet Bream take on Sue Branch, who was featuring in her first Final at PBLTC. Experience seemed to help as Janet eventually won her fourth Singles title with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. The Men's Singles, which would have seen the 2009 champion Andre Mouskides takes on last year's runner-up Mark Masters, was unfortunately cancelled due to an injury to one of the Finalists. The match will be re-scheduled and played later in the year.

The Men's Doubles featured two first team pairs who had never played each other before in the Tournament. These were Ben Bream and Paul Holman, entering together for the sixth time, and Alan Clarke and Paul Guppy, who hadn't entered the Tournament as a pair before. Ben and Paul managed to win their fifth title with a 6-2, 7-6 victory. The Ladies' Doubles saw second team pair Sonia George and Elaine Dowdall take on third team pair Nikki Hancock and Louise Morrison, which proved to be a closely fought match. The battle went to a third set with Nikki and Louise managing to take their first title as a pair with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory, after a spirited display.

The Mixed Doubles was the final match of the day which saw both the winners of the Men's Doubles face each other at different sides of the net. Third team player Mary Wikner paired up with Paul Holman and fourth team player Nicola Hayes played alongside Ben Bream. Mary and Paul managed to overcome their opponents with a close 7-5, 7-5 victory.

The Tournaments were once again superbly run by Mary Wikner over the fortnight. PBLTC is very grateful for all her hard work and dedication. Thanks must also go to the spectators for supporting the competitors, the umpires, the caterers and everyone else who participated in making it another great year for the club.

    • 02/08/11 - Men's 1st Team Gain Promotion to Intermediate!

Congratulations are in order for the PBLTC Men's 1st Team who have gained promotion after winning Division One and will be playing in the Intermediate League for the 2012 summer season. Division One is always a tough Division but it's made even harder as only one team can gain promotion. However, after a superb and consistent season, the Men's 1st Team managed to achieve promotion by winning the Division by two points over Coolhurst II!  It is the first time in the Club's history that they will have a Men's Team represented in the Intermediate Leagues. The team for the season was Ben Bream, Alan Clarke, Mark Cooper, Paul Guppy, Paul Holman, Mark Masters, Karl Mills and Peter Stewart. Well done to the 1st Team!!

    • 17/07/11 - Doris Robertson Mixed Doubles Tournament 2011

The Tournament had 16 competitors and the Final saw Sue Vallance and Steve Allen take on Irene Jenkins and Geoff Medlicott, with Irene and Geoff coming out on top. Congratulations to them for their win! Thanks to everyone who entered!
